Heal, then Thrive.

Welcome.

At times, our lives can bring enormous challenges. We carry around the ghosts of our past, and feel unsure of how to heal or let go. Sometimes we feel that we are to blame for our suffering, or undeserving of our accomplishments. We crave connection in our relationships, and to feel seen and heard.  We hope that joy, peace, and fulfillment are available to us, if  we could only shed the layers of stress and pain to discover new ways to show up in the world. I agree, and I am with you! My mission is to connect with you to explore issues, identify your strengths and values, promote growth and healing, and empower you to cultivate a life that is richer, more meaningful, and resilient.

I believe that you are the expert of your own life, and for a little while, I get to be beside you as you step into your healing, to listen non-judgmentally, support you and offer guidance.  Now is time for you to let go of your burdens and discover a life that is lighter, more joyful, and whole.

Warmly,

Holly

Who I am, how I can help

Holly Knowles is a  registered social worker, therapist and coach who draws on 20+ years of work in social services and public safety.  She is a holistic practitioner who tailors therapy according to client needs,  using evidence-based practices to help reduce stress, promote recovery, and build resilience. Holly offers confidential services for individuals working on issues related to stress, self-esteem, and relationships. She can support clients through depression and anxiety, and is trauma-informed in practice. Holly has a special appreciation for individuals who work in or have to deal with public safety issues.

Holly holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Bachelor of Arts (Political Studies) from Queen’s University. She draws from modalities such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Emotionally-Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Narrative Therapy, trauma-informed practice, resiliency models, coaching, leadership, and conflict management.

Holly’s journey throughout her career has informed her practice. Her own experiences of vicarious (secondary) trauma, compassion fatigue, stress, and burnout called on her to find strategies and solutions to stay well. Her yoga, mindfulness practices and love of nature have been instrumental to her wellbeing. She cares deeply for the environment and promotes connection with nature as an integral part of her health. Her healing journey began out of necessity but is now her inspiration to help others on their own paths to greater insight, joy and calm. Holly cherishes her spouse, children, family, friends, and goofy chocolate lab, Nala, all of whom help bring balance and delight to her life.

My Approach

My focus is to build a safe and trusting relationship with you. I listen with empathy, explore your values and strengths, and work to understand the sources of your distress and concern.  I  help you locate the thoughts, feelings and actions that serve you and those that do not. If you wish, we can invite the ghosts that haunt us into sessions for a little while, give them voice, and lay them to rest. I share ways to manage unhelpful thoughts, calm emotions, and take positive actions towards a happier, healthier you. All of your experiences are welcome, including trauma, depression and anxiety, low-self esteem, relationships with your partner, family, colleagues, and your dreams for your future.

Everyone needs an ally from time to time: I am on your side.

About Walk and Talk Sessions

Get outside, get unstuck.

Walk and Talk sessions can be a great option for those who like to spend time outdoors. They offer a more physically active option, which can help you get “unstuck” when confronting complex issues. Getting outdoors allows you to tap into your creativity and deeper thinking, which can occur with mood-improving physical activity. Being in natural environments also promotes relaxation and a sense of wellbeing. Depending on client preferences, walk and talk sessions can include a combination of traditional counselling, eco-therapy, and mindfulness practices.

Walk and Talk settings in the Kingston and surrounding area are quieter, lower traffic paths that are generally considered easy to navigate for most people. In cases where weather conditions are hazardous, sessions are moved to on-line or by phone. These may not be right for you if you experience physical health challenges that limit your ability to walk for up to one hour in length.

*Please call Holly to discuss when and where this option is available, and whether it is the right approach for you!

Take the first step toward a happier, healthier you. Whether you choose online or in-person counselling, Holly is here to help you navigate life’s challenges with confidence. Book your session now and invest in your mental health.
